Why mail servers matter

In email fraud the domain is a tool for sending and receiving messages. MX records show which servers accept mail for the domain. A lookalike domain that has MX records configured is ready to receive replies from victims, an important sign that it is being used for correspondence, not just parked.

Comparing with the genuine organisation

If a known supplier uses one email provider and a lookalike uses a different, free or newly configured service, that difference supports escalation. Combine with the creation date: a domain registered days ago with mail already active deserves urgent attention.

Limits

MX records describe where mail should be delivered; they do not prove a specific message was sent or received. Pair them with the original message headers.

  • List MX hosts and preferences.
  • Identify the mail provider.
  • Compare with the legitimate domain.
  • Preserve the original .eml file.
