Who is in a registration record

A registration record can name the registrant (the holder), the registrar that sponsors the domain, the registry that runs the top-level domain, and technical or abuse contacts. These are different roles. The registrar is not the operator of the website, and an abuse contact is not the registrant.

Redaction and privacy services

Since data-protection rules such as the GDPR, personal registrant details are often redacted or replaced by a privacy proxy. This is normal for legitimate domains and is not evidence of wrongdoing. Organisation name, state/province and country are sometimes still visible and can be compared with claims made on the website.

Using the information responsibly

Corroborate any visible name with independent sources before relying on it, because registrant data is self-declared. Where a lawful investigation needs the hidden data, use the registrar’s disclosure procedure or legal process.

  • Record each contact role separately.
  • Note whether fields are redacted, absent or unavailable.
  • Compare registrant country with claimed business location.
  • Use official disclosure routes for nonpublic data.
